This report from Joseph Rowntree Foundation highlights the catastrophe that awaits some families in the face of rising energy bills.
Some households will be faced with energy bills that eat up over 50% of their budget after housing costs. The energy crisis will have a disproportionate affect on those whose low income means that every penny is already accounted for.
Labour has a short term plan to help these households:
-Cut VAT on energy bills and expand the warm home discount
-Introduce a one off windfall tax on on North Sea Oil and Gas producers who have profited from price rises
And we’re committed to take the long-term action needed to reform the energy system & ensure secure, low carbon, affordable energy.
The origin of this crisis is firmly in the government’s own wild west energy company liberalisation of 5 years ago and now they won’t take any action to fix it!
