Usually I am in Southampton on a Friday but today I was in parliament to support Barry Gardiner’s private members bill seeking to stop fire and rehire practices.
Fire and Rehire is a bullying tactic where an employer changes terms and conditions and/or pay and if a worker refuses to sign a new contract they can be sacked and told to reapply for the same jobs.
Big firms such as Asda and British Airways were employing these tactics long before the pandemic but since March 2020 around 3million people have been told to reapply for their jobs on worse terms and conditions.
This is not right and Labour called for its end today.
Unfortunatley the Conservatives opposed us and blocked our bill. I will continue to oppose these practices where I can, they have no place in our society. #EndFireAndRehire
