Last week I wrote to Matt Hancock after the Leader of Southampton City Council, Christopher Hammond and the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Lorna Fielker got in touch with me about the lack of PPE for front line care workers.
I have not yet heard back from the Health Secretary however I am increasingly concerned after hearing about the increasing rates of Covid-19 infections in care homes.
There has been a huge effort from schools and businesses who have donated protective equipment to the council for their care workers however there is not a steady supply available to replenish stocks regularly. Far from being worried that people are using more PPE than is needed, I am worried that workers are having to use masks and gloves etc more than once which will have dire consequences for themselves and the very vulnerable people they work with. That is if the PPE is even there to use!
We need the Government to help our city, our care workers and of course all frontline workers in the NHS by ensuring they have the equipment they need to do their essential jobs safely.
In the meantime if you are a business who has any protective equipment (hand sanitiser, protective goggles, latex and vinyl gloves eg) you could donate to care workers at this time please email me on whiteheada@parliament.uk and I will pass this information on to the relevant people.
