If the Government go ahead with the cut to Universal Credit it will affect half of all working-age families with children in Southampton Test.
This is at a time when many people’s jobs and hours worked have not recovered to pre pandemic levels and many more people are claiming Universal Credit than they were before the pandemic started.
On top of this we are going to see huge rises in energy bills this Autumn and Winter and food prices are on the rise. This cut will be for so many families in our city, many of whom worked so hard to make sure we were safe in a pandemic.
Local Conservative Councillors who are now in charge of the council do not support keeping the uplift to Universal Credit, but I fail to see how our city can recover from Covid-19 when many will struggle to put food on the table in the coming months.
