Universal Free School Meals

17909528_10212792329912967_661269553_n.jpgWe announced this week that Labour would extend universal free school meals to all Primary School children paid for by charging VAT on private school fees.

The Tories are currently making big cuts to education and making it harder for kids who don't come privileged backgrounds to get on. As well as cutting EMA and maintanence grants for higher education and the re-introduction of grammar schools,  the current round of cuts will hit the most deprived schools the hardest.

I'm therefore proud that we have said that we would extend universal free school meals to all primary school pupils, a policy which has the potential to provide a healthy lunch at school to all of those who need it as currently up to 2/3rds of kids in poverty don't qualify.

We all know that kids don't concentrate well when they are hungry and offering free school meals to all will go some ways to improving attainment across the board whilst reducing the stigma that often comes with receiving free school meals.
