New computers for schools shows community spirit
12th October 2006
Thousands of pounds for new ITC equipment will be pumped into Southampton Test schools this week.
On Friday local MP, Dr Alan Whitehead, will congratulate parents, teachers and local businesses who have raised thousands of pounds for new computer equipment through the Tescos Computers for Schools programme. Last year almost two-thirds of the £30,000 raised (£19,000) went to schools in Southampton Test.
Computer literacy is now recognised as an essential part of 21st century education. State spending on computers for schools in Southampton Test has gone up from £500,000 in 1997 to £2,187,000 today- over a fourfold increase.
The Tesco run scheme works by rewarding customers with one Computers for Schools voucher for every £10 spent in a Tesco store. The voucher can then be donated to a school of the customer’s choice.
In welcoming the funding, Dr Whitehead said:
“This presentation is important for two reasons:
First, it shows the fantastic community spirit amongst parents, students and teachers in Southampton’s schools. They’ve shown that when given the opportunity they don’t just think of themselves, they think of their classmates too.
Second, it shows that business realises just how vital it is for our schools to be properly equipped. Local businesses are often eager to work with schools to provide additional resources and hopefully the new Education Bill should help foster those relationships.”
