So Far: 158 Less Lethal Weapons in Southampton
3rd June 2006
A police knives amnesty, backed by Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead, has so far taken 158 knives off Southampton's streets.
Dr Whitehead said:
"Every knife taken off the street is another potentially senseless death averted. Carrying around a knife is like carrying a loaded gun with the safety catch off. I'm really pleased to see that the message is starting to get through and that so many young people have had the good sense to rid themselves of these deadly weapons."
"The amnesty is running until June 30th, so I urge anyone who hasn't come forward yet to do so - remember you can hand your knife in completely anonymously at Portswood, Shirley, Central and Bitterne police stations.
"Getting rid of your knife means you won't get a £5000 fine. And it means you won't be one slip away from making a tragic, pointless mistake."
