MP helps local school go Green

Southampton MP Alan Whitehead will be joining pupils at Bellemoor Secondary School, Bellemoor Road, Southampton, on Thursday 11 September at 3.30pm when they launch their Eco-Committee as part of a campaign to increase environmental awareness in the school.

Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, says,
“Encouraging young people to take an interest in the impact their school has on the local environment and the decision making process of their school is a welcome step by Bellemoor School. Environmental issues are constantly in the news and the setting up of the Eco-Committee will allow pupils to take a pro-active step in seeing how the school deals with recycling, the management of waste, the use of energy and what can be done to make the school more eco-friendly.”

The work of the Eco-Schools initiative links into many areas of the national curriculum and seeks to make environmental awareness a part of everyday school life. Included in the work of the Eco-Committee will be a review of the school’s environment credentials, developing a plan of action for the school on environmental issues, involving the whole school and local community in its work and developing an Eco-Code.

Louise Quaid, Science Teacher and organiser of the Eco-Committee at Bellemoor Schools, says,
“"Bellemoor as a school is committed to promoting the improvement of the environment for everyone. We want to promote environmental awareness through subjects such as citizenship and Person Social and Health Education but also as a fun and interesting activity. That is why we are happy to be part of this exciting award scheme which will create a shared understanding the environment and how we can all make a difference. We are committed to involving pupils, staff, parents and the wider community in this initiative and so we welcome Alan Whitehead to our first meeting."
