Alan runs for Sports Relief
10th March 2010
Alan Whitehead MP has teamed up with other MPs and Members of the House of Lords to run the Westminster Mile for Sport Relief.
More than 30 Parliamentarians, including Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe, swapped their suits for shorts, trainers and Sport Relief Socks to test their sporting prowess in St James’s Park. They were joined by former England Rugby player Kyran Bracken who helped spur them on to the finishing line.
Speaking after the run Alan Whitehead said:
“It was a great atmosphere with MPs and Peers of all parties running together – I’m pleased that so many turned out to support Sport Relief. I hope people in Southampton will do the same at Palmerston Road on Saturday 21st March by coming out to run the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.”
Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport, said: “It’s been a great turn out today and nice to see so many rosy-faced MPs and Peers coming together for Sport Relief! It just goes to show that everyone can join in the fun and rise to the challenge by getting sponsored to do a Mile for Sport Relief.”
Kyran Bracken said: “MPs are usually found running for election so it was nice to see them running for a different reason! It’s been brilliant to see our politicians sweating it out for Sport Relief, so I’d encourage everyone to follow their lead and sign up to do their own Mile now at sportrelief.com.”
The Sport Relief Weekend is taking place from Friday 19th March to Sunday 21st March and it’ll be three whole days of energy, entertainment and events for everyone to enjoy. All the money raised will be spent by Comic Relief to help vulnerable people here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. For more information or to sign up for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile go to www.sportrelief.com.
