Victory on family homes campaign
January 12th 2009
Alan Whitehead has welcomed the government’s announcement that it is to build new sustainable family council homes in Southampton.
Dr Whitehead pressed the government about the need to ensure new council homes were sustainable and of a decent size earlier this year. Following on from that lobbying, the government has today announced that Southampton will receive close to £1 million to build new council homes in the city, with family housing and high sustainability standards as key requirements for funding.
Councils receiving the funding are also required to aoffer apprenticeship and local job recruitment schemes, creating 7500 jobs and around 100 new apprenticeship places across the country.
The additional council home projects to be built in Southampton are:
- Cumbrian Way- £719,332 will be spent on a project to build 13 new homes.
- Leaside Way- £251,472 will be spent on a project to build 4 new homes.
Alan said:
“I’m delighted the government has listened to me and other Labour MPs and made funding available for sustainable council homes for families. It’s a welcome boost for the local economy and for families on housing waiting lists. It’s also an encouraging sign of how serious this government is about building council homes that will last for a long time to come.”
