Alan signs up to 10:10

October 21st 2009

Alan Whitehead MP has signed up to the 10:10 campaign to cut our country’s carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

Dr Whitehead, along with a number of other MPs in the All Parliamentary Climate Change Group, is already midway through a longer-term commitment to reduce his personal carbon footprint by 25% over 5 years.

10:10 gives individuals, schools, businesses and local authorities the chance to do their bit to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions by working out how they can cut the amount of CO2 they produce by 10% in 2010.

Alan has already installed cavity wall insulation and solar panels in his house, as well as energy saving light bulbs in every room.  By recycling and reusing, he has also cut down his average household waste to on average only one bag per week.

Dr Whitehead said:

“I do my best to practice what I preach on climate change- that’s why I’m signing up to the 10:10 campaign.  It is an excellent guide on the simple things we can all do as individuals to reduce our carbon emissions.

“But the campaign is also a way to bring together support for a truly ambitious and effective global deal on climate change at Copenhagen later this year.

“I’d encourage as many people from Southampton as possible to sign up.  A 10% cut in our carbon emissions is tough but doable- and I’ll do all I can as your MP to support greener living and increasing the energy efficiency of Southampton homes.”
