Nominated for the powerful new committee on Energy & Climate Change
January 19th 2009
Dr Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test, has been today nominated for the House of Commons Select Committee which will scrutinise the work of the newly created Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
Proposed Members are nominated by the House of Commons Committee of Selection, an impartial Committee which receives suggestions from Party whips. The Committee’s recommendations will be voted on by the whole house as part of today’s commons’ business.
Dr Whitehead, a longstanding and well respected campaigner on issues relating to fuel poverty, sustainable energy production and climate change commented on his nomination:
“I am very pleased to have been nominated for the Select Committee to scrutinise the work of the Department for Energy and Climate Change. This is a policy area which I have been involved with throughout my time in Parliament, and I hope that my experience and that of my fellow Committee members will help this new Department bring Britain’s energy strategy into the 21st Century.”
“I am confident that DECC can create an energy economy where ordinary Britons are able to heat and light their homes and businesses using affordable energy from renewable sources, whether these are world-wide networks, or individual home-generation devices.
I am also confident that we can benefit and stimulate British industry during these tough economic times with the introduction and proliferation of new green technologies and the production of energy from waste. Now is the time to convert our energy model into a sustainable programme for the future.”
