Interview on future of the Ford Plant

January 14th 2009

Alan spoke on South Today last night about the need to support Southampton's Ford Plant.

Alan argued that Southampton Ford Plant was viable in the long-term, but is under threat in the very short term because of the economic downturn. Any government help is not about bailing out a fundamentally unsound business model, but on making sure Southampton retains the skilled workforce necessary to make the vans when the recession ends and demand for vans returns to its normal level.

Watch Alan's interview (interview begins about 3 minutes into the programme)

Alan concluded the interview saying:

"The Ford plant is fundamentally a very efficient plant, it's always produced very effective vans, the vans are in demand in general. At the moment there is a downturn and people are not buying or renewing vans, but they will. Therefore it's important that the plant remains in a state where those vans can be made- and that's an investment in the future."
