Energy Saving Workshop a big success

February 24th 2009

Southampton’s first energy saving workshop was such a success that the organiser, Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead, has pledged to hold more throughout the city.

The workshop, held last week, gave advice to around 100 attendees, who came from across the city to ask questions on what help was available to reduce their energy bills.

The workshop held stalls from the Southampton Environment Centre, Warm Front, the City Council and other agencies all of whom were available to give detailed advice about what help they could provide.

Many residents asked about the new government CERT grants to provide free or discounted cavity wall and loft insulation.  Queries about the government-funded Warm Front scheme, which has already carried out £2.5 million worth of work in Southampton Test replacing boilers and other heating measures, were also popular.

Alan Whitehead opened the workshop with a short speech and thanked the agencies that were taking part.

Speaking after the event, Dr Whitehead said:

“Due to the level of interest today I look to hold more workshops like this later in the year in the run-up to next winter.  The level of interest today I think demonstrates that our policy on energy- both in reducing its overall cost and increasing our efficiency in using it- is more and more important in allowing people to live free and healthy lives.”
