Alan congratulates sex worker outreach hero

November 21st 2008

Alan Whitehead has congratulated local hero Beverley Carter, who was short-listed for a prestigious Inspire Award for her work with local Southampton charity, Bridging the Gap, who work with sex workers across the city.

Dr Whitehead met with Ms Carter at a House of Commons Awards Ceremony on Thursday 20th November. The Inspire Awards 2008 are the first national awards seeking to honour the great and often unsung work being done by Christians and churches across the UK to make life better for their communities.

Beverley set up Bridging the Gap to use her own experiences to help support street sex workers and their families. The charity also outreaches to single parents, and ex-offenders, offering practical help and care. Beverley previously worked for the 3D Crime Concern project in Bevois Valley.

Dr Whitehead said:

“I had met Beverley several years ago when she was working for the fantastic 3D Crime Concern in Bevois, and it was a pleasure to meet her again, and congratulate her on her brilliant work in Southampton. She is a real inspiration, and I am delighted that she has received the national recognition she deserves.”
