Record number of city's young people getting training
23rd June 2008
New figures published this week show that more young people in Southampton are receiving post-16 education and training than ever before.
72% of 16 and 17 year olds in Southampton are in full-time education compared to 62% of 16-17 year olds in 2001.
At the same time, the combined proportion of 16 and 17 year olds in education or work based learning is also up from 72% in 2001 to 84% today.
The figures come as the government prepares to establish 90,000 more apprenticeships for under 18s, and to give the right to education and training age to all 17 year olds from 2013 and to all 18 year olds from 2015.

“More and more young people in Southampton are now benefitting from education and skills training. This is important both for their own futures and for the future of our city, because now more than ever before, our economic prosperity is tied to how well we train and educate our workforce.”
