Alan raises the future of the Southampton Ford plant in Parliament
11th July 2008
Alan Whitehead yesterday asked the Leader of the House of Commons Harriet Harman MP to set aside parliamentary time to discuss the future of the Southampton Ford plant, where the car company produces its well-known Transit vans.
Dr Whitehead, speaking in the Commons Chamber asked the Leader of the House:
“Will [she] find time for a debate on safeguarding the production of transit vehicles at the Ford Southampton plant, which is widely acknowledged to be one of the most efficient vehicle production plants in Europe?”
Ms Harman answered that she would arrange a meeting between the Southampton Test MP and the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, John Hutton MP so that they could discuss the future of the plant.
Speaking from Westminster after the House of Commons exchange Dr Whitehead said:
“I am encouraged by the Minister’s response and look forward to meeting with the Secretary of State where I will seek his support for the 1,243 employees of the Southampton Ford plant. This plant has been producing Ford Transit vans for more than 40 years. It is a model of British efficiency and a testament to the hard work of its employees. I will work hard to retain these jobs for Southampton workers.”
