PRASEG wins the 'green oscar'

22nd June 2007

Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group (PRASEG), is celebrating today after PRASEG won a top energy award last night at the Renewable Energy Awards.

The 2007 Renewable Energy Awards were held to honour outstanding achievements in the British renewable energy sector, in partnership with those already established in various regions and in the financial sector.

PRASEG won the Advocate Award for the organisation that has done the most over a number of years to enhance awareness of renewable energy amongst the public and key opinion formers, particularly in Parliament.

The award was presented to Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Chair of PRASEG by BBC Environment correspondent Sarah Mukerjee at last night's Gala dinner at the Savoy Hotel, London.

Dr Whitehead said:

“I was over the moon to accept this award as Chair of the Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group, and on behalf of all the members. PRASEG have worked hard to raise awareness of renewable energy and have continued to lobby government for higher targets of energy from sustainable sources – so it was fantastic to see all this hard work recognised by this award!”

He added:

“The aim of the group has always been to educate and enhance awareness of renewable energy both in Parliament and to the wider general public. Southampton has been leading the way in renewable and sustainable initiatives such as the geothermal energy plant and the current Combined Heat and Power Station that is being built. PRASEG will continue to promote renewable and sustainable energy initiatives so that other cities and communities can benefit from green energy.”

Philip Wolfe, Chief Executive of the Renewable Energy Association said:

"This award is timely recognition of the work that PRASEG has done under several distinguished chairmen over many years," said Philip Wolfe, Chief Executive of the REA. "And the supportive response to last night's winner announcement left the judges in no doubt that they had made the right decision. It was particularly fitting that Alan Whitehead MP, who has done so much for the renewables sector, should be the person to collect the award."
