Energy Saving Week
24th October 2006
Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, is encouraging Southampton’s residents to see if they can save 20% of their energy as part of Energy Saving Week.
In its 10th year, Energy Saving Week, 23 to 29 October, oragnised by the Energy Saving Trust aims to encourage everyone to try and reduce the amount of energy they consume on a daily basis by pledging to adopt at least one of ten small measures:
1/ Boiling only as much water as they need
2/ Turning down thermostats by 1° C
3/ Switching off appliances and not leaving them on standby
4/ Installing cavity wall insulation
5/ Topping up loft insulation to 270mm
6/ Replacing light bulbs with Energy Saving Recommended ones
7/ Installing a condensing boiler
8/ Buying Energy Saving Recommended appliances
9/ Washing laundry at 30° C
10/ Leaving cars at home for short journeys
Alan Whitehead said:
“People should not underestimate the important contribution they can make to tackling climate change. If every household replaced three light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs that would save enough energy to power Britain’s street lighting for a year. So, if we all did all the things we could the amount of energy we could save could make a real difference - in the last ten years the Energy Saving Trust has helped reduce carbon emissions by households by over 6 million tonnes.
Of course to really halt climate change in its tracks we will need to do more and go further but these first steps are crucial in setting our lives on an energy efficient path.”
