Saving Water with Oakwood Junior School

24th May 2011

oakwood junior studentsAlan met with Oakwood Junior students last week to see their work with Southampton Football Club on water conservation.

Southampton FC's World of Water workshops have been taking place in schools across the city.

The programme highlights the importance of conserving water and, in particular, how saving water will help protect the River Itchen.

Alan said:

“Water conservation is a really important issue for Southampton's future- and it will only grow more important in the years and decades to come.  This was a fantastic session and I was really impressed by how well the Oakwood Junior students responded when they were presented with all the information."

Darren Bentham, Director of Metering at Southern Water, said: “The feedback we have received from teachers, students and parents has been excellent. A simple thing like keeping a water diary for a week really makes people more aware of the amount of water they use and gives them the drive to think about ways to save it. It is particularly important as our metering programme continues to roll out across Southampton.”

Rose Timlett, Policy and Programme Officer from WWF-UK, added: “The Itchen is one of England’s most special rivers, home to some of our most rare native species. But it also provides hundreds of thousands of local homes with water.  It’s so important that children – and their parents - understand where water comes from so they value every drop.”
