Launching help for workers' training and adult literacy
24th June 2011
Southampton's Labour MPs were at City College today to launch a new initiative to support training at work, including increasing adult literacy.
Unionlearn is a new project launched by the TUC to encourage lifelong learning and training in the workplace.
Both Southampton's Labour MPs Alan Whitehead and John Denham visited Southampton City College as part of the launch of the scheme and presented certificates from the TUC Next Steps for Health and Safety Reps courses and for achievements in Adult Literacy.
Alan Whitehead, MP said:
'Union Learning Reps trained by TUC Education have changed people's lives through learning and opened up opportunities for them to develop their skills and their knowledge. City College is playing a huge role in delivering this, which is benefiting the region.'
John Denham, MP, Shadow BIS Secretary said:
'I'm pleased to be at City College, where TUC Education's courses have helped hundreds and thousands of people engage with learning at work. These people have been instrumental in spreading a culture of learning in workplaces around the area, which is a significant achievement.'
