Don't punish tenants for Council rubbish build-up

29th July 2011

Landlords should not charge their tenants for taking away rubbish that has built up because of the current Council industrial dispute, Alan Whitehead MP has said.

Dr Whitehead was contacted earlier this month by Southampton University Students Union regarding allegations that some private landlords have been charging tenants to take away their bin bags.

Dr Whitehead said:

“If a tenant does move out of their property and leaves it a mess, then it’s reasonable for a landlord to seek recompense.  But that should not extend to landlords levying unfair charges for regular household waste that has built up not because of tenants being irresponsible, but because of the current Council industrial dispute.

“It’s important that all tenants get a fair deal in this area- and that means making sure they know their rights and how to get help.”

If you are a tenant who has been unfairly charged by your landlord, you are encouraged to contact Southampton City Council Housing Services on 023 8083 3006 or housing.services@southampton.gov.uk.
