Will the Tory Council now stand up for our schools?
12th February 2011
Six local authority areas have won their battle with the current Government regarding the decision to axe the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) projects. The Education Secretary Michael Gove was ruled to have acted unlawfully when scrapping the project as he failed to consult on it.
John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, said:
“The question now is will the Tory stand-up for the people of Southampton, challenge the Government and demand the investment the city’s schools deserve, or will they just roll over and do what as they’re told, just like they did when the scrapping of BSF was first announced?”
Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test, said:
“The Southampton schools which lost their BSF funding over the summer are still in urgent need of renovation and repair. Today’s judgement potentially opens the door for the Council to get this funding restored– but only if they are willing to stand up to their Government.
