Statement on Fukushima PR plot revelations
1st July 2011
The Guardian today carries revelations that the UK Government worked to deliver a coordinated post-Fukushima PR campaign only days after the Fukushima disaster- and before the extent of any radiation leaks were known.
In Parliament Alan Whitehead sits on the powerful Environment, Energy and Climate Change Committee of MPs, which scrutinises the government's work on energy policy.
Alan said:
"There appears to be a shocking degree of collusion after Fukishima on a “line” between the nuclear industry and BIS.
"It cannot improve public confidence in the safety of nuclear if they learn that government departments and the nuclear industry were working to get their answers sorted out before any facts were on the table or an inquiry was commissioned.
"'No public subsidy for nuclear' should be about more than just putting piles of money on the table. It should mean staying on the right side of the line between interest and slavish promotion. This clearly crosses that line."
