Thanks to everyone who came to our Town Hall meeting today
11th February 2011
Shadow Secretary of State for Education, Andy Burnham MP, spoke at a packed town hall in Southampton today as part of Labour’s Fresh Ideas conversation with people across Britain.
Members of Labour’s Shadow Cabinet are holding a series of town hall meetings across Britain, to listen to voters and hear their ideas and concerns about Britain’s future.
Mr Burnham was joined in Southampton today by the city’s two Labour MPs John Denham and Alan Whitehead, and Shadow Public Health Minister Dianne Abbot.
In a wide-ranging discussion, Mr Burnham took questions from city residents on education, health, civil liberties and the economy.
He then joined a series of roundtable discussions to talk with local people directly.
Mr Burnham said:
“We know Labour has got to listen and change for the future, and I was really encouraged by the ideas and the interest from people in Southampton here today. This has been an incredibly useful and instructive event and I look forward to coming back soon to continue the conversation.”
Alan Whitehead said:
"Thank you to everyone who came along and gave their ideas. This was a really useful opportunity to have a frank conversation about what we got right and what we didn't get right in government, and how we can and will change for the future. Of course in Southampton we work to maintain a dialogue with constituents all year-round, but it is still important to have these set-piece events where we can talk about these issues in greater detail."
