Gearing up for Carers Week
4th March 2010
In preperation for Carers Week 2010, Alan Whitehead today helped highlight in Parliament the fantastic work done by those who care for relatives and loved ones.
Alan said:
“Several years ago I organised a consultation event in Southampton to help carers from my constituency feed into the Government’s plans for a New Deal for Carers. Since then the Government has introduced measures to double the number of respite days for carers, offer professional support to children who may be caring for relatives, and help carers who want to combine a part-time job with their caring role. These measures have made a huge difference to the lives of many dedicated carers.”
"But despite these measures, millions of carers in the UK still miss out on things we all take for granted in order to look after loved-ones. I urge all my fellow MPs as well as the Government to support hardworking carers and to promote the work done by organisations like Carers UK to raise awareness of the needs of these committed individuals.”
