My Week: E.U. Referendum, Renting in Southampton and Sustainable Energy

Eu_Debate_1.jpgThis week I re-visited my old stomping ground at the University of Southampton to debate the E.U. referendum, visited a organisation that helps those with mobility issues get around town and met with a range of different groups to discuss sustainable energy. Read on to find out more....

Today I was in the chamber for yet another reading of the Energy Bill, we are still trying to fight some of the worst parts of this bill including the government plans to close renewables obligation to onshore wind. I also attended a discussion about the Business of Sustainability.

Today was another energy filled day, I spoke at both the APSRG & Environmental Services Association report launch ‘Delivering Sustainable Growth’ and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies speaker meeting: ‘The Future for Energy’

Another day in Parliament today, meeting with my colleagues on the Shdaow DECC team and meeting the Westminister Sustainable Resource Forum regarding their domestic energy efficiency inquiry report. Domestic energy efficiency is something that I am always working on improving. Not only will it help the environment, but it saves people money on their bills and makes sure that people are warm in the winter months.

I was in Southampton to visit Shopmobility who do great work providing rental wheelchairs and scooters, making sure that everyone can enjoy shopping in Southampton City Centre.

I spent a lot of today at Southampton University! First of all I met with the Student's Union and we had a good discussion on how to improve renting for students in the city. A lot of our students and other residents are renting sub-standard accommodation and getting ripped off by landlords and letting agents. We have the beginning of a plan so stay tuned.

In the evening I returned to have a debate on the E.U. referendum where I was representing the Remain side. You can read some of what I said during the debate here

Creative Options are a group in Southampton that provide arty activities to people with mental health difficulties. Today it was my pleasure to be able to speak at their Wellbeing through the arts day, and get to see some of the great work they do. Today I also got to see the work of another of Southampton's fantastic groups as the Countess Mountbatten House palliative care service had a family friendly day that I was invited to.

Sunday was football day, I went to watch Saints vs Crystal Palace at home. The Vote Leave leafleters weren't having a great day, Saints got into Europe and people were asking them 'We've just got into Europe why would we want to leave'. Better luck next time.
