Alan's Re-election Campaign

April 12th 2010 highstreet

A quick message from Alan about the next General Election:

This website is to report on my work in Parliament and Southampton on behalf of all the people of Southampton Test.

I will always continue to work hard for you, whether you are a Labour supporter or not.

At the next General Election, I will be standing for re-election, and I hope very much to win your support.  If you are interested in supporting my campaign, you can do so by joining my supporters' facebook group; donating to my local campaign; or by emailing my campaign team at campaigns@alan-whitehead.org.uk.

Alan's record, Alan's promises

Alan has lived in Southampton all his adult life- he studied here as a student, and worked as a local Councillor and for two national charities- before being elected as the MP for Southampton Test in 1997.

Alan works on a variety of policy areas in Parliament, but is a particular specialist on fuel poverty, climate change, housing, and local government.

Recently he has had success in Parliament on better regulations for student landlords; on abolishing energy companies’ extra charge on prepay meter customers; and on getting Southampton fast-tracked onto the Building Schools for the Future programme.

He also still works on local campaigns, including improving parking around the General Hospital, protecting the former Civil Service Sports Ground; campaigning for a new community garden in Portswood; and to stop the Conservative Council’s plans to privatise our leisure services and sell-off Southampton’s art collection.

At this election, Alan is making five pledges to the people of Southampton Test:

  1. To protect the funding for building and renovating schools in Southampton.
  1. Reduce energy bills through better home insulation programmes.
  1. Support the NHS through guaranteed cancer tests within 7 days and longer local surgery opening hours.
  1. Build more affordable and council-built homes in Southampton.
  1. Expand neighbourhood policing and make sure that local police spend at least 80% of their time out in the local community.

Alan said:

“I’ve lived in Southampton all my adult life.  I’m proud to represent our city and I’ll do all I can to make it a better place to live and raise a family.

“There’s a real choice at the next election- support for the economy and public services with Labour, or Tory cuts that would choke off the recovery and make life harder for local people.

“I’ll fight for a fairer, greener future for everyone in Southampton- not just the privileged few.”
